Dear all,
for some unknown reason (!?), It could be due to my own mistake as well, I have been unable to log in as root to host VDI (solaris 10 that run VDA 3.2 hosted in Server Sun Ilom) for the past few days. I receive the following message:

"Roles can only be assumed by authorized users"

Since I connect remotely using Java 6 environment Java(NT) web start launcer GUI, specifically Booting in failsafe, mounted at /a, I deleted the "passwd" file in /a/etc/user_attr and /a/etc/shadow. I check hosts, nsswitch.conf. When I tried to change the password as "su," I received the message "Permission Denied."
Do you have any suggestions?
I kindly request your assistance in resolving this issue. Please let me know if there are any troubleshooting steps or solutions that I should try.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Best regards,

Was root a role or a user before this?

Goodmorning and thank you for your answer.

Yes, many years ago, same password.
booted at failsafe,
# su root
Return 30 01:41:31 su: 'su root' succeeded for root on /dev/console
#passwd
New password:
Permission Denied

Yes to which one -- root a role or root a user?

Let me see if I understand the sequence here:

You were unable to login as root-the-role;
you booted into failsafe mode; and
you editted /etc/usr_attr and /etc/shadow -- what exactly did you edit?

You then rebooted into failsafe but are unable to change the password.
(Is /etc/passwd writable?)
